When I was 9, I gained a significant amount of weight when we moved across the country. I ended up being 130 lbs in grade 4 and that is the start of my lifelong struggle with obesity.  From having to wear adult clothes as a kid to needing the seatbelt extension on airplanes for every flight I have ever taken, my top weight of 425 lbs was making life much harder than it should be.  Through tremendous aches and pains as well as trouble walking and doing lots of activity with my three little kids, I have struggled to lose weight for many, many years.

 

When I got married, I said this is the reason to lose weight now. (2005)

When we held our eldest child, I said this is the reason to lose weight now. (2009)

When we had our second child, I said this is the reason to lose weight now. (2011)

When we had our third child, I said this is the reason to lose weight now. (2013)

But these are not the right reasons for an individual.  I have to do it for me, I have to want it for me.

This led me to approach the Calgary Weight Management Centre and Dr. Shahebina Walji in the summer of 2015.  On October 9, 2015, I launched the FAT Project (Food Addict to Triathlete) which will document my journey from 420 lbs to someone who can run an Olympic distance triathlon.  The journey will be medically supported, with appropriate nutritional and activity consulting and every meal and snack will be photographed.  It has been ten months and I have lost 90 lbs, am more active than I can ever remember. We are scheduled to run the triathlon in Fall 2018.
